Sleep hygiene sounds clinical; it’s really just ten habits. Score yourself honestly — most people hit five.
The checklist
- 1. Consistent wake time, seven days a week
- 2. Morning daylight within an hour of waking
- 3. Caffeine before noon only
- 4. Cool, dark, quiet bedroom
- 5. Screens parked outside the bedroom
- 6. Last meal 2–3 hours before bed
- 7. A 30-minute wind-down routine
- 8. Alcohol avoided late (fragments sleep)
- 9. Bed = sleep only, not office
- 10. Get up if awake >20 minutes
Scoring and sequencing
7+ = excellent foundation. 4–6 = fix wake-time consistency first — it anchors everything else. Under 4 = pick the two easiest, hold two weeks, add two more.
